A new version (0.1.9) got uploaded to the market. This is mostly a bug fix release. The long-press/pie menu bug should be gone. Also, the database got moved to internal memory, there are just to many issues with the sdcard file system on Android. Downloads are possible from authenticated websites, and the download list can be cleared.

Several users had issues with start-up times, and force closing. Also, the use of the bubble during page loading was not universally welcomed. There were also some bugs that went unnoticed with the previous version.Starting Steel should be slightly improved; I’ve moved several initializations into a background task, and more improvements will come in the future. The behavior of the controls during page loading can be configured now.I also added a new way to open a link in another window (thanks Jean-loup!) by just long-pressing the link without moving. While not necessarily obvious by looking at the interface, it quickly becomes second nature. It also keeps the pie menu nice and clean.

A new version of Steel (0.1.6) is in the market. It fixes the problems with the donut version of Android. It is also a major overhaul of Steel, the most noticeable of which is the bubble now shows page load progress and pressing it during a page load stops the loading process. Most of the data is now stored in a database on the sdcard. The pie menu offers only zoom plus an option to bring up a link specific menu. The menu button brings up the page menu, settings are part of it.

Google has done it again. Without much of a warning, a new release is being pushed out and, as with Cupcake, it seems to break things. Despite the fact that Steel doesn’t use any “unsupported APIs”. Oh well. I’ve made a new build for Steel with the 1.6 SDK, but I’m trying to get it to work with both 1.5 and 1.6. It should hit the market sometime this week.

Version 0.1.0 of Steel (Cupcake Edition) has been uploaded to the Android Market. I’m working on the instructions to explain the new features. Hopefully they will be up later today. Also, this will most likely be the last free version of Steel.

A new version of the test release is up on the website. Keyboard is fixed, find is improved, more stable. There might still be the occasional ‘back’ button issue, especially in fullscreen mode, but otherwise the browser should no longer go back.

I’ve just received the 1.5 (cupcake) OTA update. Things should move along a little quicker now.

I’ve uploaded a new test version to the website. It now supports selecting text on a web page, searching for text on a page, and - organizing bookmarks with tags. Tags are just words associated with a bookmark. Enter them in the input field with spaces in between, or select an existing tag.

I have built an interim version of Steel to be tested with the “Cupcake” release of the Android OS. It is available for manual install from my website at http://www.kolbysoft.com/downloads.html . I will try to ready a full cupcake version by the time the OTA update hits the US. Meanwhile, please read the instructions on the download page, and leave feedback here. I don’t want the website bandwidth to jump to high, so please don’t spread the word yet. It still has issues, so be gentle.
